Australia has seven of the top 100 universities in the world. It comes as no surprise then that Australia has the third-highest number of international students in the world behind only the UK and the US. Thousands of students from all over the world travel to study in Australia each year because of the country’s outstanding higher education system and diverse culture.

For students looking to make Australia their next study destination, Sydney has stood out as the place most international students choose. Why? For starters, the Economist Intelligence Unit scored Sydney as a top destination for students in terms of quality education, infrastructure and health care. But besides being a great place for students to study, this city has many other things going for it like:

Culturally diverse people and warm weather

Sydney is one of the most multicultural cities globally, known as a melting pot. This means that there are many people from different walks of life with approximately 250 different dialects being spoken in the city. Around 40 percent of the population in Sydney was born overseas, from places like England, China, India, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Vietnam. You won’t find it hard to fit in.

The weather is warm with a sunny climate. The city is situated on the coastline allowing it to have more than 100 beaches. With the warm weather, you can choose to ride a bicycle, take a stroll or explore the city centre, and a lot more.

Job opportunities

International students are allowed to work up to 40 hours per fortnight (two-week period) and full-time hours during vacations and in Sydney, you’re walking into a booming economy. Sydney has a thriving cafe, restaurant and retail scene so jobs are aplenty. Additionally, the jobs in Sydney offer several benefits like flexible working hours, professional development courses and competitive salaries. Please note that every student worker is entitled to receive minimum wage regardless of the position or job title.

And because many courses offer work experience placements, you won’t find it difficult to get a very good job to gain experience and earn income for daily living. Also, many large corporations house headquarters in the city, so this should boost your employment prospects.

International students are safe and sound

In 2021, Sydney was nominated as the 5th safest city in the world by The Economist’s safe cities index. This is certainly reassuring for incoming students. The report also states that the city has a great healthcare system, very good infrastructure and outstanding community planning.

In addition to safety, the city has a great transportation system and various accommodation options located close to the city and university campuses for easy access. Less travel time and shorter distances will make for an easier and safer living, thus giving you more time to work hard and play hard.
